Damn Curse [Feb. 2nd, 2008|10:03 am]
There's a joke in the poker community to beware of the brag curse. Basically, if you brag that you are doing well, brace yourself because you will start losing. I don't know if the poker gods took my Year End post as a brag, but I was cursed for January just the same. As I have pointed out several times, I'm a small stakes player...so we're not talking a lot of money here. But in January, I lost $34. Doesn't seem like a lot, but this is the most I lost in one month since August 2006 when I made the switch to NL (and started this blog). I had 5 straight months of wins, 12 out of the last 17 months. So maybe I was due.

The problem this month was that I was on the wrong side of some big hands. Usually, I win some of those big hands. But this month I didn't. My AA vs KK, he gets his king, donk stays in with a gutshot straight against my set and hits, set on the flop, guy hits his flush, etc. Two of those big hands go my way and I'm up for the month.

At one point, I was down almost $90. So I should be proud that I fought back and was only down $34. And I did collect a $120 bonus from PokerStars that I don't count in my monthly plus/minus. February is a new month and I just opened an account at Full Tilt last night. Think I'm going to play there for a while and give PokerStars a rest.

No live poker in January. Maybe none in February either. But I'm planning a trip to Atlantic City in March.

Year End Update [Jan. 6th, 2008|10:58 am]
OK, so I'm late with my Year End Update. It was a good year (for me...in my terms) as I ended up making money. Not a lot, but my goal is to be a winning player and I've done that over the year. Yeah, I'm not talking about a lot of money here, but that's not the point for me right now.

November was my best month of NL ever since switching, so I was glad about that. $76 over 1,200 hands (told you we're not talking a lot of money!). December started off very poorly...losing about $70 right off the bat. But I'm proud of myself for grinding away and actually turning a profit. Only $10 (and only 970 hands), but like I said before, a win's a win.

Only played once so far this month and again, drop money right off the bat. That seems to be a trend with me...starting off the month with a loss and trying to recover all month. And I thought this month was going to start off the same. But this session was a little different. Was down like $20 (25NL) rather quickly. One hand that had me down was me with K2 in the BB, flop comes 8-2-2 and I eventually get it all in with a semi-shortstacker who then flips up A2. Damn. And there was another hand...AQ and I called a too big of a bet on the river with just top pair. That was a hand I could have folded on the river and saved some money.

But I started chipping away, and slowly started to get back to even. I still have to review my hands (if you play online, you really should review ALL your hands. Amazing what I find out by watching my hands after the fact.), but I think I was playing well, making good reads, taking some small pots. I was down less than ten dollars and thought about stopping before I made it worse.

Then this beauty hand. Pocket deuces in MP and I get to limp. Maybe 5 of us in the pot. Flop comes A-K-2. Bingo! No raises preflop, so no worries about AA or KK. And since this is 25NL, I know at least one person has to have at least an ace. I don't remember all the action but I think I'm heads up against the BB after the flop and I get him to go all in on the river for his $24 stack (I was around $40 by this time). He flips up A6 and I take it. The turn was a 6 and I didn't know it at the time, but that was a great card for me. Huge pot. I hung around maybe one more orbit then shut it down for something like an $18 profit. Going to try to play today, but I have 4 DVDs I should start watching.

I am in the middle of reviewing my hands for November and here are my thoughts on my play. I need to be more aggressive. There were some pots I probably could have taken down if I just would have bet out or raised. I need to be more aggressive when it's folded around to me preflop in LP...I need to raise more to at least give off an aggressive style and/or take the blinds. I also need to raise more preflop with some hands I limp in or fold. Like AJ, KQ, stuff like that. Raise or fold (depending on the conditions). I'm missing too much value. I can't hang around and wait for monster hands anymore...that doesn't work as well online anymore...the games are a little tougher and I think I need to adjust my game. I'm noticing that often my big pairs are not getting any callers preflop. I think this is because I'm not raising enough with other cards and it's too obvious that I'm raising with just premium hands. I need to raise more hands so my big pairs are better disguised and I will get paid off more often.

BTW, live poker is not going as well. Went to Wheeling and Mountaineer once each (I think) since my last update. Lost $200 at Mountaineer (mostly due to one bet I shouldn't have made and one call I shouldn't have made) and broke even at Wheeling. Going to try to go back to Wheeling sometime this month. I really need to adjust my live game as the waiting for monster hands is really not working live.

Little Update [Nov. 22nd, 2007|03:51 pm]
Still plugging away at 25NL. October was not a good month. Just 665 hands...and I won a whopping $2.25. Eh, a winning month. That's all that matters! But seriously, it wasn't as bad as it could have been since I still managed to win and not lose.

I'm trying to follow my plan from the last post and clear those bonuses at PS. I wanted to make a real effort to play more hands this month and get those bonuses cleared. I started out the month playing a lot (for me), but haven't played since the 11th. The good news is, I am up about $65 for the month. If I don't play another hand, that would be my best NL month since I switched. I have only played about 530 hands, so, yeah, I'm running good. Some huge hands in there.

I want to play some more...I want to clear this one bonus before the end of the month (just 52 more FPPs)...but I don't know if I'll have time. I went to Niagara Falls last weekend to play live poker, and went to Wheeling, WV, yesterday. But it's only the 22nd of the month. I'm going to try to get some hours in next week when I get home from work.

So, just a quick update to let you know I'm still at it. Oh, and I never did bother to look for my math mistake. Just gonna keep taking the totals right out of Poker Tracker. Another oh...I'm also still plugging away at Cake. Got my bankroll up to around $35 on there playing .02/.04. But I'm not counting that in my totals. Right now, Cake is just for fun when I feel like playing but don't feel like committing a lot of time or risk of money.

Another Quickie [Oct. 6th, 2007|11:01 am]
I'm now a 'full time' 25NL player. I had my ups and downs in the beginning. I was doing the same thing as I described in the previous entry...sit down with $25, once I lost $10, I was done. I wasn't winning, yet everytime I dropped back to 10NL, I would usually make up my losses and then some. But I wanted to move up, but my bankroll wouldn't handle it.

I had some old bonuses on PokerStars that never expire and I wasn't getting there very fast playing 10NL. So I made a plan. Deposit a little more into the bankroll so I could move up to 25NL and earn the FPPs faster to clear the bonuses. I felt that I could play at 25NL, just needed a boost to the bankroll. This is not the best plan, unless you are sure you can handle the level you are moving up to. It's best to grind it out at a lower level until you have the proper bankroll.

Since moving up, I have cleared a bonus or two and have won some money. I'm comfortable at this level and still have 3 more bonuses to clear. But I'm starting to hate the games at PS. Not enough fish. People are telling me to try Full Tilt. My plan now is to knock off two more bonuses (leaving me with one more), withdraw most of my money from PS, and move to Full Tilt. I might just leave that last bonus. I have to get like 700 FPPs for $100. That's a lot of playing.

Oh, I also play on Cake a little. Just the .02/.04 table. Another forum freeroll. And a member staked me in another tournament and I cashed. I took my share and hit the .02/.04 table. So far, I've turned that $11 into $30! But the games at that level there are extremely soft. I only play there when I want a quick game.

I did have my worst stretch of NL at the 25NL table. I lost something like $80 over 3 days. A lot for me. But I've gotten it back and am ahead again. My biggest pot money-wise also happened when I had AA. I think someone raised preflop, I reraised, he pushed all-in for something like $26. I had like $24 and of course called. He had QQ, my hand held up and I won my biggest pot. I have won more in terms of BBs at the lower limits.

One thing I don't understand is my stats are saying I'm up 125.70 since switching to NL. But looking at my last entry, that means I lost money since that post. But that's not true. I messed up somewhere. And I don't feel like figuring it out. So, we'll just keep taking the stats from the same spot and maybe I'll work on it later.

Still Going [Jul. 13th, 2007|05:29 pm]
Just a quick update. Still going at it. I've been doing pretty well so far in July, so I have a plan. I was going to wait until I had $325 in my online bank account to give 25NL a try. One buyin....no topping off. And once I got down to $15, stop. I got up to $314 and couldn't wait. So, last night, I tried 25NL.

I had played 25NL before, but less than 1k hands. Once I get used to the money, it's the same game. Unfortunately, I got no cards. Well, I did get QQ once (won a small pot), and won one or two other small pots. The most I was up was like $1.25. But I slowly slipped down and once I got to around $18, I stopped. So, we're back to the plan of getting that money back and either once I get it up to $315ish or, if I can wait, $325, I'll do the same thing...single table with one buyin, once I lose $10, I'm done...no topping off.

The good news in all this is I played some 10NL this afternoon and won almost $9. So I got my money back from the 25NL tables last night (and then some (well, a little)). So, I may take another shot at 25NL tomorrow. We'll see.

Playing in a freeroll tomorrow afternoon. I do kinda well in these things. I think my tight/passive playing is actually good in a freeroll. I usually hang around until all the idiots kill themselves and/or all the no-shows are blinded out. Then, if I can get lucky, I make it into the money. I don't play tournaments, but my biggest win was like $300 in a freeroll that I came in fourth.

Unfortunately, no money in this freeroll. The winners get a free poker forum freeroll. Meaning you win a freeroll for your favorite poker forum. Last time we did this, we won a freeroll and I ended up winning like $6. Which, for a 10NL guy like me, that's almost a buyin! I'll take it!

Wrapping it up for now...here's my stats:

It's Weird [May. 20th, 2007|08:00 pm]
It's weird going back and reading this with so much time passing. I just read the last 'real' entry and I don't remember writing it at all. Which isn't unusual for me. My memory isn't that good at times.

Anyway, a semi-quick update. I've gone back to playing NL. There was a time, as I said, that I really didn't care if I played again or not. I played less than 900 hands in all of January, and February started out the same. But I caught the bug again and started it up again towards the end of February.

My running total that I kept has to change though. With the new law being passed, I withdrew most of my money. I think I left around $125 or so in my account. I consider this my bankroll now because it's so hard to get money into your account now. Not impossible, but I don't have anything else set up since Neteller went down. So, when I say that I started with $500 for this experiment, I feel that's not true anymore. If I do updates, I'm just going to post how much I'm up or down, according to Poker Tracker.

The real reason for this blog was to see if I could make the switch from Limit to No Limit and that $500 was a cushion while I learned. After 11k hands of NL, I consider myself successfully switched. I have not made a ton of money...more on that in a minute. But I am a winning NL player which is more than I can say from my Limit playing days. 11k hands is not a huge amount, but I feel it's a good indication of things to come. If I can survive 11k hands and show a profit, I think I can always show some kind of profit.

Now, the actual numbers. The last update here shows I was up $45 and still playing .02/.05 on PokerStars. Now, I'm up about $101 and usually play .05/.10, AKA NL10, on PS. Someone was nice enough to stake me $25 to give NL25 a try. I tried it and I liked it. I won about $40 over several sessions before slipping a little. My backer (yeah, I think it's funny I had a backer) and I decided I needed to work on my aggression. So, we split up the profits and ended the backing for now and I was to go back to NL10 and work on my game. I made about $20, he made about $18 and got his $25 back. It was something like that anyway. We may do it again in the future.

So, I mainly play at the NL10 level. I think I can play NL25, but my bankroll is at the very bottom of the amount you should move up with. The general rule of thumb is to have 10 to 25 buyins at the level you are at. I have about $250 in my PS account, so I'm at the bottom of that figure. Like I said, I don't have a way to get money into my poker account right now. So I'm playing it safe and staying at the NL10 level. I did take a shot at NL25 the other day and won about $13 in a little less than an hour. And I might take a shot now and then. But mostly, I'll be playing NL10.

OK, I'm gonna end this here and go and reread my posts. They make me laugh. I don't think I'll be updating this like I used to. Probably just chime in from time to time. So I'm not going to keep track of my totals session by session or my bankroll. I'm just going to show how much I am plus or minus since switching to NL. So, here's my updated stats:

The End? [Feb. 3rd, 2007|08:36 pm]
Been a while since I posted. I think I'm giving up. I've played very little since the last post and with Neteller leaving, I really lost a lot of desire to play poker. It sucks. Maybe I'll keep playing/posting, maybe not.

Bad Session...Until The End [Dec. 23rd, 2006|02:18 pm]
We got out early from work for Christmas on Friday, so I decided to play some poker to kick off the long, holiday weekend. Even thou I have 4 days off, I don't know if I'll have time to play much poker. Actually, one of my 'poker' resolutions is to play more poker. Anyway, started at my usual .02/.05 NL on PokerStars.

It was a pretty crappy session. Couldn't find a good table. People were coming and going...tables were breaking up or were too tight. I drop KK after a couple aces pop up on the board. I win a decent pot with Kx suited and I make my flush. Drop my QQ when someone is betting big into me on the flop. This guy may have known what he was doing as he pushed me off a couple hands where I was unsure. So, I left the table.

Won another decent pot when I had another Kxs. Flopped the flush draw while another person flopped 2 pair. He was last to act and it was checked around to him and he just checked. Bad move. Flush draw out there and I hit it on the turn. Bet in front of me, I raise, guy with two pair goes all in for his last 1.55, other guy folds, of course I call and take the pot. If you have two pair or a set on a flop with a flush draw, don't check. You have to bet to try to chase the drawers out. If he would have made a decent bet, I probably would have folded. Made another good pot when I won set over set on the flop and the guy went in for his last 1.55. Did good at that table before it started breaking up. I should have just ended my session then with my winnings, but I pressed on.

Went card dead for a while. Did get a set of eights on the flop, but didn't get paid off as everyone folded. On another table, folded pocket queens to heavy betting on the flop and turn. Was pissed on one hand: finally get something to play...AKo in the BB. Two limp, SB completes, I just call. Seems I don't raise AK a lot unless I'm in EP. I'd rather see the flop. See the flop I did....7-Q-A rainbow. TPTK. SB checks, I bet .15 into a .20 pot, one guy calls, one folds, SB raises to .50. Let's see where I'm at...I re-raise to 1.25, other guy then goes all in for 3.84 and the SB raises that to 11.20! Needless to say, I think I'm beat. I fold. Turns out one guy had AQ for two pair, the SB had pocket 7's for a set. I was behind when I thought I was in front. SB's set holds up. I conclude this table is not good and leave after losing 2.33.

I try another table, but don't like it. So, I fire up one last table. Glad I did. As I sit down, I'm UTG, so I decide to wait for the Big Blind and not post. The hand is done, I post my BB, and am dealt K4o...looks like another winner. Two guys call, the SB folds, I check. Flop comes 9-K-4, rainbow. Well, the hand just got more interesting...two pair for me. But a raggy flop. I min-bet, something I rarely do. But I'm trying to show weakness and/or make it look like I'm taking a stab at the pot. I've seen many people make min-bets tonight and get raised. Hoping it can happen here as I'm thinking I'm not going to make a lot off this hand because the flop is so raggy. Both players, however, just call. Turn card is another 4. Now I got a full house. Continuing the weakness look, I check, hopping someone will catch up to me a little and start betting. Lucky me, one guy bets .10, the other guy calls. I decide this is it and raise .40 into a .42 pot. The other guy raises to .70! Hmmm. What could he have? Pocket nines for a higher FH? Don't think so. I don't think he would have just called my nickle bet on the flop with a set. Pocket Kings? Nope. He would have raised preflop. I think I'm way ahead. Now...how to make sure I get all his stack, which is sizable at 8.74 before the hand (I just bought in for $10). The other guy folds, and I decide to raise it to 3.50. He calls, leaving him with 5.14. I decide no matter the river, I'm going all-in. I've seen plenty of guys calling all-ins tonight with crap. My turn to get paid off. The river is a three, I go all-in, he calls and flips up.....74o for trip fours. Oh my. Why in the world would you play that in the first place, and then think your hand is good when I keep raising? Anyway, glad you did. I took his stack, waited until the blinds came back to me, and left.

After being behind most of the evening, that last had gave me a $6+ profit. I'm now once again thinking about moving to the .05/.10 level. I think I know what I'm doing and I think the FPP's on PS will come quicker at that level. Although the blinds are doubled, the buy-in is still $10. I may watch the play for a while and see if there's a big difference. Maybe I'll wait to actually play until sometime in January when, hopefully, I'll be playing more and will be better.

Two Weekends In A Row! [Dec. 20th, 2006|09:19 pm]
Wow....actually played two weekends in a row!! And another cheap winning session. I played for about an hour and 40 minutes and ended up winning a big 46 cents playing my usual .02/.05 NL on PokerStars. Well, that's 8 BBs, so that's not bad, is it? I started out great, then went card dead and was actually losing money for a while there.

My first 'big' hand came around during my second orbit. I had K9s in the BB, folded to the CO-1 who limps, CO limps. SB completes, I check and get my flush draw on the flop. It's checked to the CO, who bets half the pot. SB calls, I call, other guy folds. I get my flush on the turn, but check hoping to trap. Sure enough, the CO bets out again. 30 cents into a 50 cent pot. The SB folds (darn) and I raise to .90. He calls. River is nothing, I bet a dollar into a pot of 2.30...he folds.

Nothing exciting for a while until I pick up KK. One limp in front of me, I raise to .20, BB calls, limper calls. Of course, an ace falls on the flop and I think I'm toast. Checked to me and I have to c-bet because if I don't, that screams I missed the flop and/or am afraid of the ace. I bet half the pot and they both fold. Whew!!

I lose .25 when I play AQo poorly, and I win .20 when my pocket jacks are good on a board of 6-Q-Q-K-Q. Only .20 because I was afraid to bet and everybody checked it down. A small win when I play AQo much better and miss the flop but take it down with a c-bet.

That table starts to break up so I leave and fire up another one. I get nowhere on the table, playing 43 hands and not winning one. Mostly crap and missing flops. During all this, I fire up another table. And pretty much the same thing. Crap hands or nothing on the flop. All total on those 2 tables, I play 72 hands and win once. Pocket eights UTG+1 and I limp, someone behind me min-raises to .10, the blinds call, I call hoping for an eight. I get my set on a flop of 4-7-8, but there's two diamonds on the flop. SB checks, BB bets .25 into a .42 pot. I wish to take it down now so I don't have someone draw a flush out on me. I raise to .75. Original raiser and the SB fold. Turn is the ace of clubs, he checks, I bet 1.25 into a 1.92 pot, he folds.

Before that one win, I was actually down for the session. I pack it in shortly after that for my .46 win.

Finally Played Some [Dec. 11th, 2006|03:11 pm]
Once again, no I haven't given up on this blog. I just haven't had time to play online. The last time I played online was 11/11. Finally, this past Saturday, I had a chance to play. I did a lot of stuff Friday, trying to 'clear my schedule' so I could play Saturday. Surprisingly, it actually worked out and I played for 2 hours.

One thing a lot of people have been complaining about was how tight the online games were getting since they 'outlawed' online poker in the US. And I saw that first hand Saturday afternoon. Or maybe it was the table I was at. Playing my usual .02/.05 NL at Poker Stars, a raise of 3xBB (.15) would take the pot preflop a good portion of the time. If not then, a min c-bet on the flop took it down. I should have changed gears from my usual tight self to more of a donk and applied pressure, but I just sat back and waited for my monsters (as usual). I was a little mad when I had pocket deuces, hit my set on a queen high flop, and everyone folded to my .15 bet into a .20 pot. I figured at least one person would call. Yes, the table was tight. I two-tabled for a bit and the other table wasn't as bad.

No real exciting hands. I did have AA three times and QQ twice, and they all managed to hold up and win! Well, one AA doesn't count since I had it UTG, raised to .15 and everyone folded. Dang. There was another hand I lost where I was upset for a few seconds, until I thought about the hand. I forget the details and since I'm at work, I don't have the hand history to refer to. But, basically, I must have been in the BB because I ended up with a gutshot straight draw on the flop with something like, um, heck. I can't remember. Anyway, a ten falls on the turn and it completes my straight. Guy to my left bets .10, I raise to .25, he calls. Turn is a nine of hearts. This pairs the board and puts three hearts out there. Guy bets .25 and I figure I'm beat, but call anyway. Sure enough, he flips over pocket tens for the FH. I was mad for a minute thinking "any freakin' card but that one!!!", but he wasn't going anywhere with a set of tens on the turn. So, even if I went all in on the turn, he probably would have called me and I would have lost more. So, it sucked, but it wasn't that bad. Actually, I don't know why he didn't re-raise me on the turn as I think he had top set. It could have been worse.

Twice, with the Aces, I got a baby stack to go all in preflop and the Aces held up. Once was against JJ, the other one I forget, but it was bad (for them...something like AJ). That's how I made most of my money. Played about 2 hours, won 3.86. Hoping to play again this weekend. Because all these poker players like showing graphs, maybe I'll post mine. I'm impressed by it. Started out losing as I made the switch from Limit to NL, then you see when I catch on and the graph climbs. Of course, we're not talking a lot of money here, but it's fun to win and do well. One of these days, I'll have to post my thoughts about moving up. PS has a .05/.10 NL with a $10 max buyin ($10 is the max for .02/.05 as well). I've thought about moving up, but haven't.

Been Waiting For This Session [Nov. 12th, 2006|12:10 pm]
Finally had a bad session yesterday. I figured I was due one. I say bad, but I did manage to win .19, which is actually 4BB at the micro .02/.05NL I play. I say it was bad because I would have lost over $3 if it wasn't for a good hand with KK late in my session. Yeah, I know...big deal...$3. But you have to think of it in terms of BB. When the BB is only a nickle, that's a fair number of BBs.

It was a bad session because I had AA and lost to 35s when the flop came 5-4-5. He checked, I bet, he called. I think the turn was a four, giving him the FH (he ended up with a FH, whether it was on the turn or river). He continued to slow play. He checked the river, I felt something was up and just checked as well and he won. I also lost with KK when the board got too scary and I folded on the river. And my AKo also lost. Raised preflop, missed the flop but did the c-bet thing, got raised, and folded.

My one good hand was pocket kings on the button. A raise to .20 in front of me, I raise to .55, and of course both blinds call, as does the original raiser. Flop comes 2-K-6 with two hearts. Cool...got my set, but the 2 hearts worry me. The SB checks, the BB goes all in for his last 1.31, the original raiser folds. I want to get HU as I'm worried about the flush draw, so I raise to $5 to get the SB out. He insta-folds...I think he had already clicked the 'fold' check box, so it wouldn't have mattered if I bet or not. The turn is the Queen of diamonds, the river is the 8 of hearts. I'm gonna be pissed if he turns over a flush!!! But he doesn't. He flips over AKo. That was my one and only big hand that won. I stopped playing shortly after and won a big 19 cents after playing about 2 hours.

I was hoping to play a little today, but now I don't think I'll get the chance.

I'm In, I'm Out [Nov. 3rd, 2006|08:16 pm]
Another quickie session today...61 minutes. And another winning session. Cool. Here's the big hand...just the 3rd hand into my session (the usual .02/.05 NL at PS). I'm the button and get 66. There's an idiot to my left. It looks like every time someone raises preflop and there's a couple callers, this guy goes all in for like $7 and everybody folds. Jackass. Anyway, even though I just sat down, I have everybody at the table covered except one guy. We'll call him villain and he's UTG. Three people (including villain) limp in front of me and I limp. I'm worried Mr All-in is gonna push and I'm gonna have to lay my hand down. But he plays nice and just completes the SB. The BB calls. So, there's six of us to the flop, which is 6-3-K rainbow. SWEET!!! Got my set and I have to have the best hand because KK probably would have raised preflop. It's checked around and the guy right before me bets .15 into a .30 pot. This is a VERY non-scary flop for me, so I just call, looking to trap. The blinds fold. Villain raises to .45! Hmmm. This might work out. Everybody else folds and it's back to me. I raise to 1.25 and I'm willing to put it all in right now. I don't want to bet too much to scare him off. He raises to 2.05. Remember, he's the only guy at the table that has me covered. Now, I want it all in here. But I still think pushing would be too much so I raise to $6, leaving me with 3.88. I thought he would re-raise me all in, but he just called. 12.45 in the pot and the turn is the 7 of clubs, completing the rainbow. He checks, I push all in, he calls. The river is the ten of hearts. I'm scared of one thing. That he does have KK and he was hoping Mr All-in would push preflop like he was. And when that didn't happen, he was perfectly happy to drag me along. But I always give my opponents too much credit. He flips over K6s for two pair and I take a massive pot (19.26 after rake, a net of 9.33). That was cool!! In chat, he typed "2 pair no good". Gee...what gave you that impression? When I raised? When I re-raised? Or when I pushed on the turn?

No other interesting hands that I was involved in. This table got VERY wild after this hand, with what seemed like several players going all in on almost every hand. The pot has to get to $8 for me to get a FFP and I ended up getting six in a very short time. Most pots at this level are like $2 or $3 dollars. It was crazy. Too crazy for me, so I fired up another table and left. I won a couple small pots at that table and a couple small ones at another table (and lost some small ones) before deciding to stop. I won 8.78.

Played a little today [Oct. 28th, 2006|05:09 pm]
Played a little over 2 hours today. First time in a long time. The winning session steak continues as I eaked (sp?) out a 78 cent win in my usual .02/.05 NL game at Poker Stars. No real interesting hands. One of the last hands is what got me on the winning side and I decided to pack it in soon after. I had pocket 9's UTG and limp in. Three callers, and the SB min-raises to ten cents. The BB calls and so does everybody else. Flop comes 9-4-5 rainbow. POW! Top set. SB bets out .20 into a .60 pot, the BB folds, and I think about raising. But it's a pretty safe flop for me. What did he raise with? Probably a high pocket pair or AK, AQ or something like that. So I just call and hope someone behind me calls (or raises). Really, there's nothing he could have that I should be afraid of. But nobody calls...they all fold. So we're HU and the turn is a 7 of diamonds. He bets .35 into a $1 pot, I raise to .85, he calls. River is a four of diamonds. At first, I was worried about a possible flush (three diamonds now on the board) until I realized I had a FH! He checked, and I tried to figure out what he would call. There's 2.70 in the pot and he has 5.32 left. I try $1 and he calls. He flips over pocket tens and I take a nice pot.

As I mentioned, that put me on the winning side. I played like two more orbits and won one other hand when I raised with AJ UTG, got two callers, missed the flop but c-bet and they both folded.

There was one hand that was super annoying. PS now has 'fast' tables. Less time to decide and blinds are auto-posted (and you MUST auto-post). One guy goes all in preflop and two people call. On the flop, one of the guys who isn't all in gets disconnected. We have to wait FOUR minutes before it's checked past him FOUR MINUTES!! Then, on the turn, he's still disconnected and gets another FOUR MINUTES. Finally, the other guy bets and then we have to wait yet another FOUR MINUTES!! I thought once you got disconnected, your hand was automatically folded if you timed out, whether there was a bet to you or not (no all-in protect). 12 minutes for one hand is just too much. I fired off an email to PS...not to complain, but I was thinking maybe there was a glitch or something since this was a 'fast' table.

2 Posts in One [Oct. 15th, 2006|10:45 am]
Well, since the whole "online poker is now illegal" crap, I didn't play for a while. Now that things are a little bit clearer, I fired up PS and jumped into my usual .02/.05 NL game. For those of you who are new to my blog, this is my little blog of me switching from a poor, losing limit player into a winning NL player. That's why I'm at such a small stake. But actually, things are going kinda well and I'm actually thinking about staying at this level for a while. I'm not sure yet. I have to figure out what I want to do. Do I stay at this level and just be a recreational player...play a few hours a week for a couple extra bucks here and there? Or do I want to try to move up in stakes and be more serious about it. I don't have a lot of time to play, so I'm leaning towards the recreational side of it.

At any rate, I played Wednesday and again Friday, but didn't get a chance to post about it. So this post is both sessions in one.

Wednesday went well. First table I was at, I got no hands. Played a couple of orbits and decided to try another table. This table, the cards started coming. AQ early on and I won a 1.27 pot. Next hand, Q6s (clubs) in the SB, three limpers in front, so with the BB, that would be 4 (+ me)...yeah, I'll complete. And, I made several mistakes on this hand. Flop is 10-10-J, with two clubs. I'm first to act and I maybe should have bet here, but I didn't. It gets checked around and the turn is the 9 of hearts. Now there's 2 hearts and 2 clubs on the board. Again I check, the BB folds (even thou there wasn't a bet), everyone else checks. River is the ace of clubs, I got my flush! Not the nut flush since someone could have Kx of clubs. I'm not worried too much about a full house because we probably would have heard from someone with a FH by now. I bet .15 into a .25 pot, two people call, the button raises to .95. This is where I screwed up. He has 2.19 left. Like I said, I shouldn't worry about the FH, and what are the chances he has the ONE card that beats me (the king of clubs) AND he has a second club in his hand? Stupid me just calls. The two other guys fold. The button flips up 5-2 of clubs for a freaking baby flush and I take the pot, but I should have stacked him.

Later, I flop the nut flush (LOVE when that happens!), but only win a .95 pot. Sometimes, hard to get paid off with a hand like that unless someone gets a hand. I get pushed off my pocket queens when someone check-raised me all in for his last 2.03 when the board came up 9-7-7 with two clubs. I don't feel like racing with QQ if he has a flush draw and he was in the SB (and called my 4xBB preflop raise) so he could have a 7. I get lucky again when my A5s makes a flush on the river. An orbit or two after that, I decide to leave that table and join another...not sure why.

But I'm glad I did. Nothing really going on early on...I raise with KK and everyone folds. I go a couple of orbits with nothing happening, then get AA one off the button. Two limpers in front and I raise to .25 thinking that will get rid of the blinds. It doesn't as the SB calls me as does the two limpers. Flop is good for me...2-8-T rainbow. I get nervous with big pairs because the chance to lose a lot is great. You have to be willing to let them go and sometimes I don't. So, I wouldn't mind if I win right here. There's 1.05 in the pot and it's checked to me. I shouldn't have bet so much, but I bet $1. A little concerned when the SB calls me. What could he have? I immediately think set. That's what I do...immediately think the other guy has me beat. I'm not as bad as I was, but the thought still creeps in there. Plus, you figure he has something or he wouldn't call. The two other guys fold. The turn is another 8. Great. If he made a pair of eights on the flop, he now has me beat. He checks. I figure he'll let me know if I'm beat by check raising here. I can't check. That's weakness and if he bets the river, I have no idea where I'm at. I bet $1 into a 3.05 pot. He calls. Damn. What does he have? I'm usually ok at reading hands, but I can't figure this one out. KK? QQ? He probably would have reraised me preflop. JQ and he's staying for the gutshot? I've seen it done at these low levels. River is a harmless looking 6 of spades. He checks. Screw it. He can't have anything good if he keeps checking. Obviously, he's worried about what I got. Put up or shut up time...he's got 3.31 left, so that's what I bet (there's 5.05 in the pot). I'm surprised when he calls. He flips over JJ and I take a nice pot. Tough spot for him as all the cards on the board were undercards to his pair. But he has to think about what I might have...I raised preflop...you got to think about AA, KK, and QQ there. Sure, I could have had AK or AQ and he would be good. But to throw the rest of your money in there on the river? Maybe he thought my bet was too big and I was trying to buy the pot? I don't know what I would have done in his situation.

Nothing much happens after that. I see another couple of orbits and call it a night. I seem to be doing fairly well at the switch to NL. Seems like I'm losing small pots and winning big ones. I mean, I've lost a couple big ones too, but I've won more big ones than I lost. So, for this session, I'm up another 7.29.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

And now I'll swing right into my Friday session, which didn't go so well. I've been running well and have wondered if it's luck or skill. Luck left me a little tonight. Still a positive session, but not by much.

First table, again, no cards, so I leave...down .22. Second table, third hand in, KK UTG+1. UTG limps, I raise to .20, all fold, UTG+1 reraises to .35. He's got 4.90 in front of him and I'm willing to go all in if he pushes. I raise to .75, he calls. Flop is 4-J-A with two spades. He immediately pushes in his last 4.50. Well, hell. I think for a while and fold. While there's a lot I beat, I am losing to AK, AQ, AJ, AA, JJ. All possible hands he could be holding. The only thing he might reraise with that I do have beat is QQ. So now I'm quickly down $1 on the night. I have four winning sessions in a row, and 7 out of the last 8. This could be a loser of a night. A couple of small losses later, and I flop the nut flush. I manage to make a little money off it. The 8 of clubs hit the river, putting four clubs on the board. The other guy made his straight with the eight, but the fourth club hurt me. If only it was a different 8...I would have stacked him. Dang. The table starts breaking up, I have no table image (I was pushed off a couple hands), so I leave...down another .59.

Third table was a little better. A couple orbits in, I get A&o in the BB. Get two pair on the flop, but there's two diamonds. I play it fast and someone who probably was on a flush draw calls me down to the river and folds to my river bet. I win another small pot later with AQo. Another orbit or two after that, I pack it in and book my big big big .25 win! I keep the streak alive!

(no subject) [Sep. 30th, 2006|04:12 pm]
I'm on a nice roll right now. Played about 2 hours this afternoon and booked another winning session. As usual, it was the .02/.05 NL at PS. I see they have also have .05/.10 NL with a max buyin of $10 (the max buyin for .02/.05 is also $10). I've been thinking about moving up to that level, but I guess it doesn't really matter much as the only difference is the blinds are twice what I'm used to. With the buyin being the same, I don't think there would be a lot more money on the table. Well, at any rate, I guess I should just grind it out for a while where I'm at. I still have a lot to work on.

I am opening up my starting hands a bit. Some hands I would have folded in my old limit days are ones I'm trying to sneak in while playing NL. This hand, I have KQs 2 off the button and we're down to seven handed for now. Well, putting it that way, maybe KQs isn't that bad of a starting hand. One limper in front of me, I limp, one caller behind me, the blinds call. The flop is 7-J-10 rainbow with one spade. Cool....I have an OESD. The SB checks, the BB bets .10, one caller, I just call, as does the button...the SB then folds. Turn is the 5 of spades. Missed my straight, but I picked up a flush draw. Unfortunately, I was concentrating so much on the straight that I didn't even notice the flush draw. The BB bets out .15 into a .65 pot. One caller and me still thinking about the straight, I call...the button folds. The river is the 3 of spades. My first thought? Damn it! I missed my straight!! Then it dawned on me that I got a flush. A king high flush. Well, I guess that's good too! BB checks, other guy bets .20, I raise to .50, BB folds, other guy calls and flips up J8 of spades for a smaller flush. I take a nice little pot. Very next hand, I do hit my straight on the turn, but no action and I net 12 cents. Better than losing!

Later, pocket sixes in the BB. Three people limp, I check. Flop is 5-6-K rainbow...got my set. I'm first to act and I know that people will call you down with anything so I bet out. Thought about slow playing, but I don't know if most of the people at this micro limit will know what I'm doing anyway. I think it's just best to bet out your hand unless you're up against someone who you know knows what they're doing. I bet .10 into a .22 pot, the next guy raises to .20. This is both good and bad. Good because he hit something and maybe I can make some money. Bad because he chases out the other 2 people. I re-raise to .50, he calls. That might have been a mistake. Once he raised, I'm thinking maybe I should have just called and let him take the lead on the turn. The board was not scary for me. At any rate, the turn is a jack, I bet .50, he calls. I'm thinking he's got a king. River is a four, I bet 1.00 into a pot of 2.22 and he calls. Sure enough, he flips over K8s and I win the pot.

This is the last hand I'll describe since after this one, I pretty much played break-even poker the rest of the time. I'm UTG+1 with pocket eights. UTG folds, I call, two other callers behind me, the button raises to .15, both blinds call the .15. Normally, I would throw my hand away. But there's .60 in the pot and it's costing me just .10 to call. Six to one odds. Not bad! I call as does the other two guys. Another good news/bad news as the flop is 5-K-8, all diamonds and (obviously) I don't have one. But I hit my set. I'm hoping for the board to pair and NO MORE DIAMONDS!! The SB bets .20. The pot is .90 plus his .20...20 cents to win 1.10...five to one. I just call. I want to get to the river as cheaply as possible, and I'm worried about the preflop raise from the button. But everyone else folds and we're headsup. The turn is the ten of spades and he bets .85. Now, I'm more concerned, but I call anyway. The river is the harmless looking 2 of hearts and the pot is 3.00. He bets the pot. I almost insta-call because I felt this was a big time overbet. He wouldn't have bet me that much if he had a flush. He would have bet me something like $1 or maybe even less. Something to get me to call. But to be on the safe side, I just call. Sure enough, he flips over A6o with the ace of diamonds. On the nut-flush draw and he misses, costing him 4.20. Cool.

The rest of the session were either small wins or small losses. I didn't lose any big pots. The two biggest 'net' losses for me today was .40 and .30. Wish they could all be like that. Grand total, just over 2 hours, plus 5.93.

Another Quickie [Sep. 28th, 2006|05:32 pm]
Got home early from work and even thou I'm very tired, I fired up PS anyway. Might have been a bad move as I had trouble concentrating. But I chased a flush (guy wasn't betting much to try to get rid of me) and hit and was quickly up .78 at the .02/.05 NL table. A couple more orbits and I thought about leaving, but didn't. Probably a mistake as I started playing hands you shouldn't play and stayed in too long a couple times. And now I'm down .03 when an interesting (to me) hand came up. I had JJ on the button. I hate having JJ as I never know how to play it. So I just limp with three others and both blinds call. The flop is 10-4-2 rainbow. I got top pair. I plan on betting at it when someone ahead of me bets .20. I should have raised. Looking back, I probably would have taken it right there. But I just call. I'm stupid. I'm inviting trouble. For goodness sakes, be more aggressive!! Everyone else folds. The turn is a king and he bets .40 into a .70 pot. Again, I just call. Don't know if I should have called. I figure he has a ten or a pocket pair. River is a 3, he checks. I was ready to check, but decided to (finally) put pressure on him since he showed weakness. I bet 1.00 into a 1.50 pot. He thought about it, then folded. I was up .77 and when the BB came around, I got out. Played for 50 minutes and I think I'm lucky to show a profit for the day with the way I was playing. Hope to play Friday night and/or Saturday.

Hit and Run [Sep. 25th, 2006|07:29 pm]
Came home from work and decided to play a little...the usual .02/.05 NL at PS. Not going to play for long. Maybe an hour. The GF is working late, so why not? Turned into an even shorter session...hit one big hand and basically left.

First table I sat, I played 20 hands and left down one penny. I didn't like the table, so I left. The second table, I played one orbit and was getting ready to leave for another table. I was UTG and got AQs. People were raising higher than I've been used to. I'm used to raising to about .20, but these people were raising .30, .35 preflop. That's why I was getting ready to leave. So, I raise .25. Everyone folds except the BB. Flop comes 9-7-4 rainbow. He checks, I c-bet .20 into a .52 pot. He calls. I don't like this call. I have nothing and he called my bet so I'm thinking he caught something or has a pocket pair. Although I couldn't figure out what he would call a preflop raise with that has a four, seven, or nine in it. Turn is the four of diamonds, putting a pair out there and giving me the nut flush draw. He checks. Still thinking he has something and I have nothing but a draw, I check and hope for the best on the river. BAM! River is the 3 of diamonds, giving me the nut-flush. I'm hoping he bets into me, either because he thinks he's got the best hand or he's representing a flush. I'm also hoping he doesn't have a FH. Sure enough, he bets $1 (pot was .92). Then, tragedy. I'm on call for work this week and the on call cell phone starts ringing!! Noooo! Not now!!! I answer it and ask if the guy can hold on for a minute. He says yes. Now I'm all flustered. I raise him back a dollar. He re-raises. I'm afraid of the FH and a little distracted from the cell phone ringing and I just call. He flips over A-4 of clubs for trip fours. My flush is good and I take a nice pot. Had the cell phone not rung, I might have gotten more. I'm in the BB next hand and I sit out to tend to work. BTW, horrible play by the BB in that hand. Calling a 5x BB raise with A4s? And then going for the check-raise on the turn? Yeah, I sucked out on him, but he deserved it! I need to talk like that because it seems I don't suck out on people often.

Got the guy from work off the phone and went back to poker. I logged out of the table from the hand above. I actually had sat down at another table right before the phone rang and I'm still there sitting out. I check out the table and decide to keep playing once the blinds get to me. I get nothing in one orbit and decide to pack it in...take the money and run. 38 hands, +2.97, making up for Saturday's mess. I might play tomorrow night or I might take it easy and catch up on some TV.

Seven Freakin' Hours...and Nothing [Sep. 24th, 2006|09:49 am]
Well, this is going to be a short one because I don't feel like talking about it. I played my usual .02/04 NL at PS, and one of my first hands is KK. I raise 4x BB and the button is the only caller. Flop is Q-x-x, I bet, he calls. Turn is a Jack, I bet more, he calls. I'm thinking he has a queen and is calling me down. River is a blank, I bet even more, he calls and flips over QJo for 2 pair. You cold-called QJo for 4x BB? Idiot. I'm quickly down around $3.50 and spend the next SEVEN hours trying to get it back. Never do and end the night down 1.58. Awful cards and, after reviewing some hands, I played others poorly. I would have made a small profit if I had the sense to fold when I should. BTW, I think that was my longest online session. I don't plan on playing at all today. Maybe tomorrow night.

Finally Back At It [Sep. 22nd, 2006|09:53 pm]
Finally able to play some tonight. I started doing the 'running commentary', but decide to stop and will just write about my hands afterward. Again, I'm at Poker Stars, playing .02/.04 NL.

The first table I was at doesn't seem too bad. Although there are some bigger stacks now. OK, now I'm seeing some pretty bad play. Unfortunately, I can't get any good starting hands. Had Axs and had a flush draw on the flop...min bet to me, so I called. But I didn't get my flush on the turn, so I folded.

QQ in EP...raise to .20. Sorry to see 4 people call, including both blinds. I'm wishing for a queen on the flop and/or no king or ace because someone has to have one or the other. The flop is good news/bad news. It's A-Q-3 with 2 clubs. I got my queen, but there's 2 to the flush out there. The BB bets .15. I'm thinking he got his ace and he's testing the waters. The SB is looooose and in the short time I've been at the table, he's already won two big pots by hitting on the river. I don't want him drawing out his flush on me (if he's working on one) or I want to make him pay for missing it. Also, he has more than me and I could lose my stack. So I raise to 1.25. There's $1 in the pot and I wouldn't mind winning it right here. As I expected, the SB cold calls the 1.25. I put him on the flush draw. The BB also calls. I still think he has an ace. The turn is the eight of hearts and it's checked to me. OK, now I really want to end this now. I bet 3.50 into a pot of 4.75, not realizing this would put the BB all in. I'm glad when the SB folds. The BB calls. Remember, on PS, they don't flip the cards over until the end, even thou everybody's all in and there won't be any more betting. The river is the 3 of diamonds, giving me a full house. I didn't need it as the BB flips over K7 of clubs for the flush draw. I take his stack and win a nice pot of 8.79 (net 5.12). Before he leaves, he types "fucking draw" in the chat box. Donk. Keep chasing. I'm happy.

But my happiness is short lived. A little later, I'm in the BB with 54o. FIVE people limp, the SB folds (??? can't call .03 into a .30 pot?), I check. Flop is a nice 5-9-5 for trip fives. I'm first to act and bet .20 into a .32 pot. Two people call. The turn is a disappointing 9, meaning anybody with a 9 beats me. I check, other guy checks, button bets .40. I feel I have to call. Other guy folds. River is a blank, I check, he bets $1, and I call. Well, that sucked. He had Q9o. Q9o?? You play that from the button? Maybe. I don't fucking know. I wouldn't. I lost 1.65 on that hand. I was mad. I'll post that hand on the forum to see what I should have done. I couldn't fold a FH. (Update...one guy answered so far and said I should have folded.)

I start getting some playable hands preflop, but getting nothing on the flop. One guy is cleaning up by just betting after the flop and a lot of times he picks up the pot right there. I have won only one hand...the big one from above. I'm losing interest. I start thinking about leaving this table. This one guy (the one guy who bets after the flop a lot and is collecting some change this way) is raising fairly often. I limp in with some questionable hands, only to have someone raise behind me to some stupid amount and I have to fold.

I get pocket fours in the BB...one player limps, the SB completes, I check. Flop is 6-4-10 with two clubs. The SB checks. I can't fool around with the two clubs out there so I bet the pot (.15), the other guy calls, the SB folds. The turn is the jack of spades, I overbet .50 into a .45 pot, he folds.

This next hand, I blew it. KQo on the button. Two limpers, I call, SB completes, BB min-raises to .10. He's been doing this a lot. He's the one that keeps betting out after the flop and taking a fair number of pots right there. Everyone calls. The flop is Q-7-6 rainbow...TP, good kicker. The blinds check, the only guy with a bigger stack than me bets .20 into a pot of .50. One guy folds, I call, the blinds fold. I should know right now that I'm in a good position. He was under the gun...what does he have? A set? Possible. But I think a queen is more likely. He seems pretty tight, so I don't think he's playing something like Q7 or Q6. And unless he has AQ and didn't raise, I think I'm ahead. Turn is the ace of clubs. He min-bets .05. I should have popped him here. Min-bet? Either he's trapping or he's afraid of the ace. Would you min-bet if you had a set and the other guy called your .20 bet on the flop? Stupid me just calls. River is a ten, he bets .35, I call, he flips over Q10s...he rivered me for 2 pair. I was ahead the whole time, just like I thought. I need to start trusting my reads. I need to do this at this level so when I move up, it'll be second nature.

The blinds come around, I leave. I jump to a table I thought I would like. But as soon as I join, two people leave. I hate playing shorthanded and it seems like the seats aren't filling very quickly tonight.

This hand shocked me. Didn't know I had it in me. My second hand and I get QQ UTG+2. It's folded to me and I raise .20. Two people call, the blinds fold. I'd really like to see a queen on the flop again. But I don't. It's J-2-A rainbow. I hate the ace. I'm first to act and I c-bet .20 into a .67 pot, hoping both will fold. One does, one calls. Shit. He's got an ace. Turn is an 8. Fire barrel #2...35 cents into a pot of 1.07. He calls. Fuck. River is a K, which also puts a backdoor flush out there. Screw it...fire barrel #3...50 cents into a pot of 1.77. I'm kissing my profit for the night goodbye when he folds. WHEW!!! Maybe he had a jack and figured I had the ace. I don't know. Two more hands later, I'm in the BB and just leave, hoping to find a full table.

First hand at a new table and I'm lucky again. I post the blind and get 69s. Flop is J-6-6 and I eventually take it down on the turn. A little while later, KQo UTG. I think about opening my game a little and this table seems passive. Let's see if I can sneak this one by without someone raising. I do as everyone folds to the blinds, who both call. The flop is Q-Q-K!!!! ZOMFG!!!!! Flopped a FH. It's been a while since I flopped a monster. Now, how to play. I don't think I'm going to get much for this hand. What could they be holding that they would call with? The BB just sat down a hand or two ago and only bought in for $2. The SB checks, I'm trying to think what I can bet and get them to call me when the BB bets! Cool. I just call the .15 bet. Now I want his stack. The SB folds. Turn is a blank and he bets again. I just call. River is a blank and he bets again...20 cents into a .75 pot. What can I bet that he would call? God, I hope he re-raises. Only two hands beat me...pocket queens or pocket kings. I decide to raise to .55 and he folds. Got more money out of that than I thought.

I stick around for another orbit or so, then decide to leave. About 90 minutes, up 3.67. A good session...but it should have been more. I need to get more aggressive at times and learn to lay down a monster if I think I'm beat. Right now, I'm basically nut-peddling. Can't do that at the higher limits. You won't get paid off like you will at these micro-limits.

Started (on 8/12/06): $500
Before Session: $505.66
Session: +3.67
After Session: 509.33
Running Total - Up 9.33

No Time [Sep. 18th, 2006|04:09 pm]
No, I haven't given up on my journal. I've just been so busy that I haven't had a chance to play any poker. I'm hoping I get a chance Tuesday or Thursday night and over the weekend.
